“How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions!” (Psalm 35:17 ESV).
David wrote this psalm while surrounded by enemies who had repaid his kindness with betrayal. He addressed God directly, crying out with a raw and honest question. Notice what David did not ask. He did not accuse God of failing to see. David believed with all his heart that God was watching, that the Lord had witnessed every insult and every attack. His anguish was not that God was blind or absent, but that God seemed content merely to look on. To David, the Lord appeared to be a spectator when he longed for Him to be a rescuer. “How long?” was the cry of a man who trusted God’s sight but wrestled with God’s timing.
We often feel exactly as David felt. We know God sees our struggle, yet we wonder how long before He acts on our behalf. The delay can feel like distance. But God is never slow, and His apparent silence is never neglect. His timing is perfect. As the apostle Paul said, “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son” (Gal. 4:4). Christ arrived not a moment early and not a moment late, but at the appointed hour the Father had planned. The same God who sent our Savior at His appointed time will answer us according to His timing too. So let us keep believing. Let us stay thankful and content in the waiting. Let us trust His heart when we cannot yet trace His hand. And when the question rises within us, “How long, O Lord?”, let us answer it with faith that His rescue is already on the way. Wait for it.
PRAYER: Dear Father, we confess that waiting is hard and our hearts grow weary. Thank You that You always see us and that Your timing is perfect. Help us trust You in the silence, remembering that You sent Your Son at just the right time. Grow our faith as we wait, and keep us thankful and content until Your answer comes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
