“This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead” (John 21:14 ESV).
The Apostle John gave reliable testimony about Jesus Christ that hearing it, we might believe. In this verse, John noted that this was the third appearance of the risen Christ to the disciples as a group. He was not counting Jesus’ earlier appearance to Mary Magdalene, but the three appearances to the gathered disciples recorded in John 20 and 21. Throughout his Gospel, John included remarkable details that reflected the perspective of an eyewitness. He remembered Peter jumping into the sea to reach Jesus, the charcoal fire already prepared on the shore, the exact number of fish caught in the net, and many other vivid details. These were not the observations of a distant storyteller but of someone who was actually present. Such details add credibility to John’s account and remind readers that the resurrection was not a myth but a historical reality witnessed by real people.
We can take confidence in the trustworthiness of God’s Word. The detailed testimony of John strengthens our faith that Jesus truly lived, died, and rose again. As we read John’s Gospel, we can allow these details to draw us into the scene. We can imagine the smell of the charcoal fire, the splash of Peter entering the water, and the excitement of the disciples as they recognized the risen Lord. Rather than rushing through the text, we can meditate on its details and allow God’s Spirit to deepen our understanding. John’s attention to detail invites us to enter the Story by moving from merely observing to actively believing.
