“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day” (John 6:40 ESV).
The apostle John recorded Jesus’ words to the crowd who sought Him after the feeding of the five thousand. He told them that they were not truly seeking Him, but the bread that He had given them. Jesus directed their attention from the bread to Himself, saying, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). He explained that the Father’s will was for people to look to the Son and believe in Him for salvation. For He alone could give eternal life. True faith involved more than just seeing and knowing about Jesus. It meant spiritually recognizing who He was and trusting Him completely. Jesus promised that everyone who believed in Him would have eternal life and would be raised up on the last day. Eternal life was not presented as merely a future hope, but as a present possession for believers. At the same time, Jesus assured His followers that their salvation would one day be consummated in resurrection glory. The invitation was open to everyone who would believe in the Son.
We often think of eternal life as something that begins after death, but Jesus taught that eternal life begins the moment we believe in Him. Eternal life is not only about quantity, meaning life that never ends. It is also about quality, meaning the full and abundant life Jesus described in John 10:10. Through Christ, we can experience forgiveness, peace, joy, purpose, and fellowship with God right now. Even when life is difficult, we can live with confidence because our future resurrection is secure in Christ. We do not have to wait for heaven to begin enjoying the life God intended for us. As we look to Jesus daily in faith and trust, we begin experiencing the fullness of life that only He can give.
When does eternal life begin? It begins the very moment we place our trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for sending Your Son so that we might have eternal life. Help us to look to Jesus for true and abundant life every day. Strengthen us to live in the joy, peace, and abundance You provide through Him. For we anchor our hope in the future resurrection that is assured in Him. In Jesus’ name, amen.
