LET THE ONE WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD!

“Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day” (Psalm 52:1 ESV).

David composed this psalm as a Maskil, a teaching song, when Doeg the Edomite told Saul that he had gone to Ahimelech the priest (1 Sam. 21–22). Doeg’s report led to the horrific slaughter of eighty-five priests and the destruction of the town of Nob. In the face of such evil, David declared that the boasting of the so-called “mighty man” was nothing compared to the enduring love of the Lord. The arrogant may trust in their deceit, violence, or wealth, but their power is fleeting. God’s steadfast love endures, sustaining His people like an olive tree rooted in His house (v.8).

Like David, we sometimes face betrayal, opposition, or injustice. In those moments, we may be tempted to focus on the “mighty” ones who seem to boast in their strength. But David turned his eyes to God’s covenant love, declaring that he was like an olive tree thriving in the house of God (v. 8). In the Middle East, the olive tree is a powerful symbol of resilience and fruitfulness. It thrives in rocky, dry, or stormy conditions. Even when cut down or burned, new shoots emerge from the roots, some of which are thousands of years old. David compared his life to such a tree—rooted in God’s love, steadfast through every season. Instead of focusing on our circumstances, let us sink our roots deep into God’s unfailing love and draw from His living water. Then we too will thrive and bear fruit, boasting not in ourselves, but in the Lord who sustains us.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, keep us from envying the boasting of the wicked. Root us deeply in Your unfailing love so that, like the olive tree, we may stand firm and bear fruit in every season. May our boast always be in You, the One whose steadfast love endures forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
