He describes two forms of deception: one that wounds through falsehood and another that seeks to manipulate through flattery. Both reveal a heart that lacks genuine love for others.

The Hebrew expression translated “a flattering mouth” literally suggests a “smooth mouth.” It describes speech that sounds pleasant and agreeable but conceals deception. Flattery may sound like encouragement, but its purpose is manipulation rather than edification. This proverb concludes a passage exposing hypocrisy, concealed hatred, and malicious intentions (Prov. 26:23–28). Verse 24 declares, “Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart.” Thus, whether through slander or flattery, deceptive speech reveals an unloving heart.

We sometimes excuse lying, gossip, exaggeration, or insincere praise because we believe our intentions are harmless. Yet Solomon calls us to consider not merely our intentions, but the injury our words may cause. We may not feel hatred toward someone, but when we deliberately deceive them, our actions contradict our profession of love. Dishonesty is not merely a failure to tell the truth; it is a failure to love our neighbor.

The Christian alternative is to speak “the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15). Jesus is our perfect example. He never manipulated people through flattery, nor did He use truth maliciously. He was full of “grace and truth” (John 1:14). Through faith in Him, we receive both forgiveness for our sinful words and the transforming power of His Spirit to speak truthfully and lovingly.

PRAYER: Dear Father, forgive us for the times our words have deceived or wounded others. Search our hearts and remove every trace of dishonesty and hypocrisy. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we may speak the truth in love, reflecting the grace and truth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. In His name we pray, amen.

“A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.” (Proverbs 26:28 ESV).
