For in these things I delight, declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:23–24 ESV).

Jeremiah contrasted three inadequate grounds of human confidence with one sufficient ground of glory. Human wisdom, strength, and riches have always been measures of success. They shape the pecking order of society and often become the things people boast in and depend upon. Yet God warned Judah that none of these would save them from the judgment that was coming.

Not what we know.
Not what we can do.
Not what we possess.
But Who we know.

The greatest boast is that we “understand and know” the LORD. Knowing God means knowing the One who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness, and who delights in these things.

Paul later echoed Jeremiah twice: “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord” (1 Cor. 1:31; 2 Cor. 10:17). And in 1 Corinthians, he explained why: Christ has become for us “wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1 Cor. 1:30). The wisdom, strength, and riches we seek are ultimately found in Christ.

We must ask ourselves what gives us our sense of worth and security. Is it what we know, what we can accomplish, or what we possess? All these can disappear. But knowing Christ is an eternal treasure. Let us measure our lives not by human success, but by whether we know Him and are becoming like Him.

PRAYER: Dear Father, teach us to treasure knowing You above every earthly achievement. May our only boast be in Jesus Christ, Your Son. May we boast of Him and declare His gospel to the world.
