{"id":14584,"date":"2026-09-29T07:57:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T11:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.garycombs.org\/blog\/?post_type=oyb&#038;p=14584"},"modified":"2026-09-29T07:57:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T11:57:17","slug":"a-prayer-to-finish-well","status":"publish","type":"oyb","link":"https:\/\/www.garycombs.org\/blog\/oyb\/a-prayer-to-finish-well","title":{"rendered":"A PRAYER TO FINISH WELL"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come\u201d (Psalm 71:18 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The psalmist did not ask God for a longer life, but for a longer ministry. In verse 17, he looked backward: \u201cO God, from my youth you have taught me.\u201d In verse 18, he looked forward: \u201ceven to old age and gray hairs.\u201d The same man who had learned from God in his youth wanted to spend his later years telling others what he had learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old age was pictured as a season of testimony, not retirement from usefulness. His prayer, \u201cdo not forsake me,\u201d was connected to mission more than merely fear of aging. Certainly age brings greater vulnerability, but his dominant concern was outward-looking: \u201cLord, keep using me because I still have something to tell the next generation about You.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul expressed a similar desire when he wrote that although he longed \u201cto depart and be with Christ,\u201d he knew that to \u201cremain in the flesh\u201d was more necessary for the sake of others (Phil. 1:23\u201324).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For believers, the greatest testimony we can pass on is the gospel. Telling the next generation that Jesus Christ died for our sins, rose from the grave, gives eternal life to all who believe, and is coming again, is the most obedient and faithful way to finish well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us not merely ask God for more years, but for more usefulness. Our goal in growing older should be to keep declaring His faithfulness and His saving power in Christ to those coming behind us. We finish well when we spend our remaining years helping the next generation know and follow Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRAYER<\/strong>: Dear Father, sustain us all our days and keep us faithful to the end. Give us strength to tell the next generation what You have done for us in Christ. May our lives point others to Jesus until our final breath.
