{"id":14577,"date":"2026-09-26T08:51:54","date_gmt":"2026-09-26T12:51:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.garycombs.org\/blog\/?post_type=oyb&#038;p=14577"},"modified":"2026-09-26T08:51:55","modified_gmt":"2026-09-26T12:51:55","slug":"zeal-for-gods-house","status":"publish","type":"oyb","link":"https:\/\/www.garycombs.org\/blog\/oyb\/zeal-for-gods-house","title":{"rendered":"ZEAL FOR GOD&#8217;S HOUSE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me\u201d (Psalm 69:9 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David wrote as one whose devotion to God had become costly. His zeal for God\u2019s house had \u201cconsumed\u201d him. The Hebrew word for \u201czeal\u201d speaks of intense passion, and the verb translated \u201cconsumed\u201d means to devour or consume. Together, the words paint the picture of a holy fire burning within David, a passion for God\u2019s glory that was consuming his whole life. He cared so deeply about God\u2019s honor and worship that opposition to God became opposition to him. The insults directed toward God had \u201cfallen\u201d upon David because he had openly identified himself with the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet David\u2019s experience pointed beyond himself to the greater Son of David. When Jesus cleansed the temple, driving out those who had turned His Father\u2019s house into a marketplace, John wrote, \u201cHis disciples remembered that it was written, \u2018Zeal for your house will consume me\u2019\u201d (John 2:17). Jesus perfectly embodied the zeal David had only imperfectly expressed. The holy fire of His devotion to His Father\u2019s glory would ultimately consume Him in the sense that it would cost Him everything, even His life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul quoted the second half of Psalm 69:9 in Romans 15:3: \u201cFor Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, \u2018The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.\u2019\u201d Jesus willingly bore the hostility of those who rejected God. He did not live to please Himself, but to accomplish the Father\u2019s will and save sinners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may burn with passion for our families, our hobbies, our favorite sports team, or even for our church. But biblical zeal is different. It is a holy fire that burns for the glory of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus shows us what such zeal looks like. He loved His Father\u2019s honor more than His own comfort and accepted reproach rather than abandon His mission. At the cross, the One whose heart burned perfectly for God\u2019s glory bore our sin and shame so that we might become God\u2019s children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because we belong to Christ, may that same holy fire increasingly burn within us. May we care deeply about His worship, His Word, and His mission. Let our zeal be shaped by Jesus, not by anger or selfish ambition, but by sacrificial love and devotion to God\u2019s glory and God&#8217;s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRAYER<\/strong>: Dear Father, kindle in us a Christlike zeal for Your glory. Guard us from burning with passion for ourselves while growing cold toward You. Fill us with love for Your house, Your Word, and Your mission, and give us courage to bear reproach for the name of Christ.
