How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!\u201d (Isaiah 14:12 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah spoke to Judah concerning the future fall of Babylon long before Babylon had carried Judah into captivity and before Cyrus conquered that mighty empire. In this taunt against Babylon\u2019s king, Isaiah pictured him as the brilliant morning star, suddenly falling from the heavens. The Latin Vulgate translated \u201cDay Star\u201d with <em>lucifer<\/em>, meaning \u201clight-bearer\u201d or \u201cmorning star.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the historical level, Isaiah described the proud king of Babylon. The five \u201cI will\u201d statements that followed reveal his arrogance: \u201cI will ascend to heaven&#8230; I will make myself like the Most High\u201d (vv. 13-14). Such pride certainly characterized Babylonian rulers like Nebuchadnezzar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the language also seems to reach beyond the earthly king to the spiritual power behind such rebellion. Satan himself desired God\u2019s place and glory. Jesus\u2019 words seem to echo Isaiah\u2019s imagery: \u201cI saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven\u201d (Luke 10:18). Whether Isaiah was consciously describing Satan behind Babylon\u2019s king or using celestial imagery to expose the king\u2019s satanic pride, the truth remains clear. Satan\u2019s rebellion and every earthly power animated by that same spirit follow the same path: self-exaltation followed by divine humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We must recognize that the desire to exalt ourselves is never harmless. Pride whispers, \u201cI will ascend. I will determine my own way. I will take the highest place.\u201d But God alone belongs on the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gospel shows us the opposite path. Babylon\u2019s king tried to climb upward and was brought down. Jesus, who truly possessed equality with God, willingly came down. He took the form of a servant, humbled Himself to death on a cross, and therefore God highly exalted Him (Phil. 2:5-11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So let us reject the fallen one\u2019s way of self-exaltation and follow the humble King who descended to save us. The question, \u201cWho is this fallen one?\u201d ultimately warns us not only about Babylon and Satan, but about the pride that would imitate them. Instead, let us bow before Jesus, the One who humbled Himself for us and now reigns above all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRAYER<\/strong>: Dear Father, guard our hearts from the pride that seeks its own glory and resists Your rule. Help us recognize the sin of self-exaltation and turn from it. Give us the mind of Christ, who humbled Himself for our salvation. May we gladly bow before Jesus as Lord and find our joy in His glory rather than our own.
