{"id":14532,"date":"2026-09-12T09:24:49","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T13:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.garycombs.org\/blog\/?post_type=oyb&#038;p=14532"},"modified":"2026-09-12T09:26:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T13:26:25","slug":"who-is-this-root-of-jesse","status":"publish","type":"oyb","link":"https:\/\/www.garycombs.org\/blog\/oyb\/who-is-this-root-of-jesse","title":{"rendered":"WHO IS THIS ROOT OF JESSE?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples, of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious\u201d (Isaiah 11:10 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah spoke to Judah during a time when other powerful nations threatened to dominate them. At the end of Isaiah 10, Assyria appeared like a towering forest, yet God promised to cut it down. By contrast, the house of Jesse, whose name God had changed to Israel, looked like a dead stump. Yet Isaiah announced that from it God would raise up His promised King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah first described the Messiah as a shoot coming from the stump of Jesse (Isa. 11:1), but here he called Him \u201cthe root of Jesse.\u201d Jesus later used similar language of Himself, saying, \u201cI am the root and the descendant of David\u201d (Rev. 22:16). He is David\u2019s descendant according to His humanity, yet David\u2019s Lord and source according to His deity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah said this King would stand as a \u201csignal\u201d for the peoples. The word pictured a banner raised high so that people could see it and gather around it. The Messiah would not rule Israel only. The nations would seek Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul quoted this verse in Romans 15:12 saying, \u201cIn him will the Gentiles hope.\u201d Isaiah\u2019s language of seeking and inquiring of the Messiah therefore pointed beyond curiosity to faith and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Isaiah said that the Messiah\u2019s \u201cresting place shall be glorious.\u201d His dwelling and reign would be marked by glory. That promise has already begun to be fulfilled as people from every nation come to Christ through the gospel, but it awaits its visible consummation when Jesus returns to reign as King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is the promised Root of Jesse. He is the banner to whom people from every nation are being gathered. We can place our hope in Him now, knowing that every earthly kingdom will eventually fall, but His kingdom will endure forever. And we can proclaim Him confidently to others, because Jesus is not merely Israel\u2019s promised Messiah. He is the hope of the nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when we ask, \u201cWho is this Root of Jesse?\u201d Scripture gives us the answer: He is Jesus Christ, our Savior, our King, and our hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRAYER<\/strong>: Dear Father, we praise You for keeping Your promise to send the Messiah. Help us to always place our hope fully in Jesus and to point others to Him as the Savior and King of all nations. Keep our eyes fixed on His coming kingdom and make us faithful witnesses until He returns.
