If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?\u201d (Proverbs 22:26\u201327 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solomon warned against recklessly becoming responsible for another person\u2019s debt. The expression \u201cgive pledges\u201d literally pictured striking hands to seal an agreement. Here it referred to cosigning a loan, promising to pay another person\u2019s obligation if that person failed to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The warning was not necessarily an absolute prohibition. Rather, it cautioned against assuming an obligation that could bring financial ruin. Verse 27 described the possible consequence. If the guarantor could not pay, even his bed might be taken from beneath him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This did not contradict Scripture\u2019s repeated commands to be generous. Giving and guaranteeing are different. Giving releases something we possess. Guaranteeing can place resources we do not have at risk based on decisions someone else controls. The wisdom principle was clear: do not make yourself responsible for a debt you cannot afford to pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are called to be generous, compassionate people, but generosity must be guided by wisdom. We can help those in need without placing our families in unnecessary financial bondage. Before guaranteeing another person\u2019s debt, we should ask whether we could faithfully fulfill that obligation ourselves if called upon to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet this proverb also points us toward Christ. Hebrews 7:22 calls Jesus the \u201cguarantor\u201d of a better covenant. He willingly took responsibility for a debt that was not His. Our sin left us owing what we could never repay, but Jesus knew the full cost, possessed the power to pay it, and paid it completely at the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So while wisdom warns us, \u201cDon\u2019t assume a debt you cannot pay,\u201d the gospel invites us to worship the Savior who assumed the debt we never could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRAYER<\/strong>: Dear Father, give us wisdom to be generous without being reckless. Guard us from financial obligations we cannot bear, and make us faithful stewards of all You have entrusted to us. Above all, help us rejoice in Jesus, who paid the debt of sin we could never pay.
