I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine” (Psalm 50:10–11 ESV).

Asaph wrote Psalm 50 to God’s covenant people, confronting them about a false view of worship. They were bringing sacrifices, but some apparently thought their offerings supplied something God needed or earned His favor. God reminded them that every animal they brought to the altar already belonged to Him. The beasts of the forest were His. The cattle on a thousand hills were His. Every bird and every creature of the field was known by Him and belonged to Him.

God could not be enriched by their sacrifices because He already owned everything. They could not place Him in their debt or purchase His favor through religious activity. Instead, verse 14 revealed what God desired: “Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving.” True worship came from grateful, trusting hearts that recognized everything they possessed had first come from Him.

We can fall into the same trap when we begin to think that our giving, serving, praying, or church attendance somehow earns God’s approval. Yet what can we give to the One who owns everything? Even our lives, abilities, possessions, and next breath are gifts from His hand.

The gospel turns our thinking completely around. We do not bring God a sacrifice to earn His favor. God provided the sacrifice for us. Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb” (Genesis 22:8), and John declared of Jesus, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

So we worship not to purchase grace, but because grace has already been given. What can we give to the One who owns everything? We can give Him our grateful hearts.

PRAYER: Dear Father, everything we have belongs to You. Forgive us for ever thinking we can earn Your favor. Thank You for giving us Jesus, the Lamb You provided for our salvation. Fill our hearts with gratitude and teach us to worship You in faith and thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
