I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10 ESV).

The sons of Korah wrote Psalm 46 to God’s people in a world filled with turmoil. The earth gave way, mountains trembled, waters roared, nations raged, and kingdoms tottered. Yet God remained their refuge and strength. He broke the bow, shattered the spear, and burned the chariots with fire.

Into that chaos God declared, “Be still, and know that I am God.” The Hebrew word translated “be still,” can mean to cease, desist, let go, or drop one’s hands. This was more than an invitation to quiet reflection. It was a command to stop striving and acknowledge God’s sovereign supremacy.

The raging nations needed to stop fighting against Him. God’s people needed to stop fearing as though everything depended upon them. Both needed to recognize the same reality: He alone is God, and He will be exalted among the nations and throughout the earth.

We often exhaust ourselves trying to control circumstances we were never meant to control. We worry, scheme, struggle, and carry burdens as though everything depended upon us. But God calls us to release our grip and recognize His rule.

Jesus gave us an even more personal invitation: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He then promised, “you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28–29).

Our rest is not found merely in stopping. It is found in coming to Christ. We can lay down our fear, surrender our need for control, and trust the One who reigns over everything. When the world rages and our hearts grow weary and fearful, we can stop striving and see that He alone is God.

PRAYER: Dear Father, forgive us for striving as though everything depended upon us. Help us release our fears and burdens and rest in Your sovereign care. Draw us always to Jesus, where our weary souls find true rest. May You be exalted in our lives and throughout the earth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“Be still, and know that I am God.
