{"id":14449,"date":"2026-08-14T08:08:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T12:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.garycombs.org\/blog\/?post_type=oyb&#038;p=14449"},"modified":"2026-08-14T08:08:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T12:08:02","slug":"the-spirit-was-given-to-instruct-us","status":"publish","type":"oyb","link":"https:\/\/www.garycombs.org\/blog\/oyb\/the-spirit-was-given-to-instruct-us","title":{"rendered":"THE SPIRIT WAS GIVEN TO INSTRUCT US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst\u201d (Nehemiah 9:20 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nehemiah recorded the Levites\u2019 prayer as they rehearsed God\u2019s faithfulness before the assembled people of Israel. Looking back on Israel\u2019s wilderness years, they remembered that God had not merely given His people manna to eat and water to drink. He had also given them His \u201cgood Spirit to instruct them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This statement is especially significant because it explicitly attributed teaching and instruction to the Spirit of God, a ministry that would be revealed even more fully in the New Testament. As Jesus later promised His disciples, \u201cThe Helper, the Holy Spirit&#8230;he will teach you all things\u201d (John 14:26).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hebrew word translated \u201cinstruct\u201d meant more than simply communicating information. It carried the idea of giving understanding, insight, and wisdom. God had given Israel His Word, but He had also graciously given His Spirit to help them understand how to receive and obey it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The setting made this gift even more remarkable. Israel had rebelled against God and made a golden calf, yet God had not abandoned them. In His mercy, He continued leading, teaching, feeding, and sustaining them. The gift of His Spirit was therefore not only a lesson about divine instruction. It was a testimony to divine grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We still need both the Word of God and the Spirit of God. We can read Scripture and yet fail to understand its significance apart from the Spirit\u2019s illuminating work. We can know what God commands and still need His Spirit to convict us, guide us, and empower us to obey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when we open our Bibles, let us do so prayerfully. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to open our understanding, expose our wrong thinking, show us Christ, and teach us how to live according to what we read. God has not left us alone with a book and told us to figure it out. He has given us His Word, and He has given us His Spirit to instruct us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRAYER<\/strong>: Dear Father, thank You for giving us Your Word and for giving us Your Holy Spirit to teach us its truth. Open our minds to understand, our hearts to receive, and our wills to obey what You say. Keep us humble and teachable before You.
