Some claimed Paul, others Apollos, and still others Cephas. Into this fractured fellowship, Paul reminded them of their true identity: “you are God’s temple.”

The “you” in this verse is plural. Paul was not primarily speaking about each believer’s physical body, as he would later in 1 Corinthians 6:19. He was speaking about the church gathered together. In Southern, we might hear it as, “Don’t y’all know that y’all are God’s temple?”

What made the Jerusalem temple sacred was the presence of God. Now, through the Holy Spirit, God had chosen to dwell among His people. Peter described believers similarly as “living stones” being built together into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:5).

This made division far more serious than a mere organizational problem. The Corinthians were damaging something God considered holy. The church did not belong to Paul, Apollos, or any other leader. It belonged to Christ. The church was His bride and His body. He alone was its Husband and Head.

We must remember that the church is not primarily a building, an organization, or a pastor’s ministry. We are the church. God dwells among us by His Spirit.

Therefore, we must resist division, personality cults, selfish ambition, and anything that tears apart Christ’s body. We must love one another, serve one another, forgive one another, and protect the unity of the Spirit.

Buildings may help the church gather, but they are not the church. The church is the people, not the steeple.

PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for making us Your people and dwelling among us by Your Spirit. Guard us from pride and division. Teach us to love, serve, and protect the unity of Christ’s body. May our church display the beauty and holiness of Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV).
