I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God that cost me nothing” (2 Samuel 24:24 ESV).

The book of 2 Samuel recorded David’s response to Araunah’s generous offer of a threshing floor and sacrificial animals after God’s judgment on Israel had been halted. David refused to offer a sacrifice that cost him nothing because such an offering would not reflect genuine reverence or gratitude. For true worship always involves both a recognition of worth and an offering in response to its worth. David knew this.

Araunah’s threshing floor later became the site of Solomon’s temple, where countless sacrifices would be offered (cf. 1 Chronicles 21–22). The place where judgment stopped became the place of worship. David’s costly purchase pointed forward to an even greater sacrifice. Jesus Christ would one day give His own life so that God’s judgment against sin might be forgiven.

We are reminded that worship always carries a cost. It may cost us time, resources, comfort, reputation, or self-denial. While salvation is God’s free gift, worship calls for our wholehearted response. When we consider that Christ gave everything for our redemption, our only right response is to “offer our bodies as a living sacrifice (Rom. 12:1). In other words, since Christ gave His all for us, our only appropriate worship is to offer our all back to Him. As we yield our lives, our priorities, and our possessions to the Lord, we demonstrate that He is worthy of our highest devotion. True worship means to recognize Christ’s worth and to give Him what He’s worth.

PRAYER: Dear Father, You alone are worthy of our worship and praise. Forgive us when we offer You only what is convenient or costs us little. Help us recognize Your infinite worth and respond with wholehearted devotion. Thank You for giving Your Son, Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice paid the full price for our salvation. Teach us to surrender our lives, our resources, and our plans to You as an act of grateful worship. May our lives declare that You are worthy of all we have and all we are. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“No, but I will buy it from you for a price.
