Luke 1:1-4), and this intimate story likely came from Mary herself, who “treasured up” all these things in her heart (Luke 2:19, 2:51). Years later, as she reflected, she may have told how she and Joseph searched for Jesus in Jerusalem with great distress for three days before finding Him in the temple. At the time, she did not fully understand His words about His Father’s house. Yet with time, and especially in light of His death, burial, and resurrection, she may have seen that those three anxious days were a faint echo of a greater “third day” still to come.

Luke showed that even at twelve years old, Jesus knew His identity as the Son of God and His mission. Yet, remarkably, He returned home and submitted to His earthly parents. The One who was fully aware of His divine calling still waited in perfect obedience for the Father’s timing. The God of the universe humbled Himself under human authority.

We are reminded that when we are looking for Jesus, our understanding is often incomplete. Like Mary, we may experience moments of confusion or distress when God’s ways are not immediately clear. Yet we can trust that Jesus knows exactly who He is and what He is doing, even when we do not. We are also called to follow His example of humble submission and patient obedience. If the Son of God could wait on the Father’s timing and submit to earthly authority, how much more should we trust God’s plan for our lives? As we are looking for Jesus, we must learn to wait, trust, and obey, believing that what we do not yet understand, God will make clear in time.

PRAYER: Dear Father, when we are looking for Jesus and do not understand what You are doing, teach us to trust Your wisdom and timing. Help us to follow Christ’s example of humility, submission, and obedience. Give us faith to believe that even in seasons of confusion, You are working out a greater purpose that will one day be clear. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions” (Luke 2:46 ESV).
