As Israel’s high priest, Aaron was commanded to pronounce this benediction over the congregation so that God’s name would be placed upon them (Num. 6:27). The blessing consists of three paired lines, each beginning with the covenant name “LORD” (Yahweh). The poetic structure grows beautifully in Hebrew—three words, then five, then seven—suggesting an expanding abundance of divine favor. Each line highlights a different aspect of God’s covenant care: blessing and protection, grace and favor, and finally peace.

The imagery of God’s “face” shining upon His people spoke of His personal presence and approval. In the ancient world, a king’s favorable gaze meant life and security; likewise, the LORD promised to look upon His people with grace. Many Christian readers have also seen in the threefold repetition of “the LORD” an early hint of the triune work of God. The Father blesses and keeps His people, the Son reveals the shining face of God and shows grace through redemption, and the Spirit lifts up God’s presence upon believers and grants peace. Thus, this priestly blessing revealed God’s desire to dwell with His people and surround them with His favor.

We recognize that we cannot manufacture blessing for ourselves; true blessing comes from the LORD whose name rests upon His people. Through Christ, we experience the fullness of this promise: the Father keeps us, the Son reveals God’s grace to us, and the Spirit fills us with peace. When we hear or speak this ancient blessing today, we are reminded that God’s favor is not distant but personal. His face shines upon us in Christ, and His Spirit abides with us. Therefore, we live each day trusting the LORD to bless, keep, and guide us. As we rest under His name and walk in His peace, we learn to receive and share a beautiful benediction.

PRAYER: Dear Father, we thank You that Your name rests upon Your people. Bless and keep us by Your power. Let Your face shine upon us through Jesus Christ and fill us with Your grace. Lift up Your presence over our lives and grant us the peace of Your Spirit.
