\u201cThe Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him\u201d (Nahum 1:7 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Nahum, a prophet of the Lord, wrote this oracle to the people of Judah around 663\u2013612 BC, amid Assyria’s brutal oppression after Nineveh’s temporary repentance in Jonah’s time. Though the book vividly describes God’s fierce judgment on wicked Nineveh, verse 7 pivoted to comfort Judah, revealing God’s unchanging goodness as their protector amid chaos. He contrasted divine wrath against enemies with intimate care for the faithful remnant who trusted Him, emphasizing God’s sovereign knowledge and refuge for His own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We live in days that often feel overwhelmingly dark\u2014global unrest, personal trials, and spiritual battles rage around us. Yet Nahum 1:7 declares that no matter how fierce the storm, God remains good, our unshakeable stronghold. He intimately knows us, numbering every hair on our heads, and shelters those who run to Him. This verse points forward to our ultimate security in Christ, our refuge and deliverer, who paid for our sin on the cross so we might take refuge in Him forever (cf. Hebrews 6:18). When fear grips us, we flee to Jesus, finding peace that transcends circumstances. He is our stronghold, watching over us through every dark day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading the prophets like Nahum can be challenging for the modern reader. Here are some helpful tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Start with the big picture\u2014read the whole book quickly for its main theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Ask: What is the sin? What is the judgment? What is the hope?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Look for the gospel\u2014see Christ Jesus bearing wrath and fulfilling promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Pray for application\u2014seek humility, justice, and faith in your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Read them in community\u2014use groups or commentaries for clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
