The phrase “do your best” carries the sense of zealous effort and wholehearted devotion. Timothy was to live and labor before an audience of One, seeking God’s approval rather than man’s applause. Paul compared Timothy’s work to that of a skilled craftsman who “cuts straight” (Greek: “orthotomeō”) the Word of Truth. This imagery would have been especially meaningful coming from Paul himself—who was a tentmaker by trade (Acts 18:3). He knew what it meant to carefully cut and stitch thick pieces of leather or canvas so that the final product would hold together properly. In the same way, Timothy was to handle the Scriptures accurately, cutting them straight, without twisting or misusing them. False teachers in his day were mishandling the truth for selfish gain, but Paul charged Timothy to be a faithful workman, one who rightly divides and rightly applies God’s Word.

In a world filled with competing voices and opinions, it’s easy to get distracted or deceived. But those who seek to follow Christ will listen to the voice of God in Scripture. We are not to approach the Bible casually but to study it diligently. Like Paul and Timothy, we are called to be workers who cut it straight—interpreting the Word faithfully and applying it truthfully in every area of life. God’s approval matters infinitely more than the applause of people. As we give ourselves to the serious study of His Word, our minds are renewed, our hearts are strengthened, and our lives become living testimonies of His truth.

PRAYER: Dear Father, we desire Your approval above all others. Help us to be diligent students of Your Word, cutting it straight as faithful servants who bring You joy. Give us discernment to hear Your voice above all others and courage to live by what You say. May our study and service honor You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15 ESV).
