But they said, “We will not walk in it.”’” (Jeremiah 6:16 ESV).

Jeremiah spoke these words to Judah in the late seventh century B.C., when the nation stood at a moral and spiritual crossroads. They had abandoned the covenant, trusting instead in false gods and political alliances. The Lord’s invitation was clear: return to the “ancient paths”—the tested and trustworthy way revealed through the law of Moses and the wisdom handed down through the prophets. These “ancient paths” were not mere traditions of men, but the well-worn road of God’s revealed Word, proven by generations of the faithful. The promise was rest and life, but tragically, the people answered, “We will not walk in it.” Their refusal soon led to destruction and exile in Babylon.

Every generation faces crossroads like Judah. God’s way is not hidden, but revealed in His Word and confirmed in the lives of those who have gone before us. The “ancient paths” represent more than clinging to old customs; they call us back to the wisdom of God that never grows outdated. In a culture addicted to novelty—new ideologies, new pleasures, new definitions of truth—the Lord still invites us to seek the path that is proven, good, and life-giving.

Jesus Himself echoed Jeremiah when He said, “Take my yoke upon you … and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:29). To follow and live in Christ is to walk the ancient path that leads to new life. The choice remains before us. There are “crossroad” moments for every nation and generation. I wonder what our next generation will decide. Will they choose the old, godly way or not?

PRAYER: Dear Father, we stand at the crossroads of decision in this generation. Forgive us for when we chase novelty for its own sake and make fools of ourselves. Break the hearts of this generation, so that instead of looking to the next new thing, they look to You. Help us to call and lead others to follow Jesus as the Way to You. In His name we pray, amen.

“Thus says the LORD: ‘Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
