How does one run to a name? Pray the Jesus Prayer: “Κύριε Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ, Υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἐλέησόν με τὸν ἁμαρτωλόν” (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner).

When we say “I will” instead of “His will,” we move into dangerous waters. Pride is the sin that gives birth to many other sins. Satan’s fall began with him saying “I will be like the Most High.” Pride makes us enemies with God. Humble yourselves and draw near to God.

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22)

Get advice before you act. Cultivate a personal board of advisors for your life decisions. Choose those whose lives exemplify wisdom. Then, be humble enough to follow their counsel.

When we answer anger with anger, we throw fuel on the fire of their response. When we answer with gentleness, we turn down the temperature. Be filled with the Spirit and bear spiritual fruit. Gentleness and self-control, for instance.

“He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge” (Proverbs 14:26)

When we fear (respect, revere) our God it teaches our children more than our words. It teaches them that we are not the final authority but are all under God’s authority. It provides order to a world full of chaos and security in a time of storm.

“Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18)

Some recklessly scatter words throughout the day injuring everyone within earshot. Others have yielded their tongues to the Lord and wisely dispense life and blessing. Ask God to tame your tongue.
