BELIEVERS GLADLY LISTEN TO GOD’S WORD

May 16, 2023

“Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God” (John 8:47 NLT). Jesus explained to those who refused to believe in Him that their unbelief was based on their willful rejection of truth. This willful rejection of Jesus as Messiah revealed them

“Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, ‘Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?’ ‘No, Lord,’ she said. And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I. Go and sin no more'” (John 8:10-11 NLT).

JESUS NEITHER CONDEMNS NOR CONDONES OUR SIN Jesus mediated between the adulteress and her accusers, yet still called her out of her sinful lifestyle. For Jesus did not come into the world to condemn the world, but that through Him it might be saved (John 3:17). As the Son of God, He is both the

“If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32 HCSB).

DO YOU KNOW THE TRUTH? Jesus gave those who believed in Him and continued in His word three promises. The first promise was assurance of salvation. For those who continue or abide in Christ’s word prove themselves to be His disciples. They live in His word and His word lives in them.   The second

“For if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24b NKJV).

WILL YOU DIE IN YOUR SINS OR BELIEVING IN CHRIST? Jesus warned that those who did not believe in Him as the Christ, would die in their sins. Sin is the state of all of Adam’s race. It begins as an attitude of the heart that wants its own way, and manifests as an act

THOSE WHO BELONG GLADLY LISTEN
Jesus explained to those who refused to believe in Him that their unbelief was based on their willful rejection of truth. This willful rejection of Jesus as Messiah revealed them to be “children of the devil” (John 8:44), rather than children of God. For if they had been of God, then they would have “gladly” listened to the words of God spoken by Christ.

The apostle Paul wrote that the things of God are “foolishness” to those without the Spirit for only those who are spiritual can understand them (1 Cor. 2:14-15). And so, the Lord Jesus still asked, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matt. 11:15).

Do you gladly listen to the Word of God?

‘Later Jesus said to them again, “I am going away. You will search for me but will die in your sin. You cannot come where I am going.”’ (John 8:21 NLT).

SEEK HIM WHILE HE MAY BE FOUND
Jesus warned the crowd that he would soon be “going away” and then it would be too late to find Him. Jesus would soon go to the cross and after His resurrection, would ascend to heaven. Those who would not believe in Jesus would ultimately “die in their sins” and therefore be unfit for heaven.

Most of those in the crowd did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah, even though He was with them fulfilling every word the prophets had written. After Christ’s departure, they would continue to “search” for the Messiah, but they would not find him, for he had already come and they had not recognized him.

Now is the time to follow Jesus. Tomorrow may be too late. Therefore, listen to the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near” (Isa. 55:6).

“Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust” (John 8:8 NLT).

THE AUTHOR OF ALL CREATION WRITES IN THE DUST
When the religious leaders brought a woman accused of adultery before Jesus in order to entrap him, he stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. Finally, he answered, “Let the one without sin cast the first stone.” Then, he stooped down again to write in the dust once more.

Many have speculated as to what Jesus wrote. Did he merely draw doodles in the dust as many a bored student has done in the margin of their notebook? Did he begin to list the sins of each accuser, so that they lost heart and beginning with the oldest, dropped their stones and departed? Perhaps he was following the test for adultery as found in Numbers 5 and using the dust of the Temple to write the curse for adultery? Truth is, no one knows what he wrote.

Certainly, more words have been penned and books written about Jesus than any other subject. Yet, this is the only record of His writing: “Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust.”

Isn’t this what the Author of Life has done for you and I? He has “stooped down” to erase our sin and write righteousness in its place. We are the dust He has breathed life into and made us living souls, with our names writ large in the Book of Life.

‘Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34 ESV)

This was Christ’s response to the Jewish leaders who claimed to have no need of being “set free.” He told them that they were “slaves to sin.” In other words, sin owned them. Even if they wanted to stop sinning, they couldn’t. Sin was their master. And the fact that they were blind to this slavery, made its grip upon them all the more powerful. Denying their sinfulness, they remained enslaved. Yet, if only they had confessed. If only they had admitted their sin and powerlessness to stop, then Christ would have broken their bonds and set them free.

“I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me” (John 8:28 ESV)

Jesus only did what the Father authorized and only said what the Father instructed. He was perfectly attuned to the Father at all times. The one that would follow Christ is invited into this oneness (John 17:20-23). Not a rote or ritual checking of boxes, but a real relationship. It is this relationship that Christ came to offer, giving His life that we might believe and be made right with the Father.
